There is rarely such a thing as a quiet day at the shelter.
Some days have a little more breathing room than others, while on others it feels as though every job arrives at once. This was definitely one of those busy, busy, busy days.
The day began with Sally heading to the vets for her third UV light therapy session. Regular veterinary care is an important part of looking after the dogs at the shelter, and we were pleased to hear that the vet is happy with Sally's progress so far.
Of course, a trip to the vets doesn't finish when we arrive back at the shelter. The crate used for transporting Sally also needed a thorough wash and clean ready for the next time it is needed.
An Unexpected Water Delivery
As we arrived back in the village, we spotted the man who delivers water to the shelter filling his tanker.
We had actually been expecting him the following day, so his early arrival was a welcome surprise.
Water is one of those everyday essentials that is incredibly easy to take for granted, but at the shelter it needs to be planned for and managed carefully. With the water delivery arriving, we also had the opportunity to give the trees around the shelter a really good drink.
In the hot Greek weather, they certainly needed it.
Making Every Journey Count
Not long afterwards, the tractor arrived with the trailer.
When you have a shelter to run, you quickly learn to take advantage of every useful journey, so the opportunity was too good to waste. The rubbish sacks were loaded onto the trailer so they could finally be taken away and disposed of.
It might not be the most glamorous side of animal rescue, but cleaning, waste disposal and keeping the shelter environment organised are all part of the daily work required to keep the dogs comfortable and their surroundings safe.
And Then Came the Dog Food
Just when it seemed as though the day might finally be slowing down, the food supplier arrived with another delivery.
Several bags of dog food needed unloading and storing. As our supplier has a heart condition, we made sure to handle the unloading ourselves.
And with that, another job was added to an already very long list.
Just Another Day of Shelter Life
Vet appointments. Water deliveries. Cleaning crates. Watering trees. Moving rubbish. Unloading food.
None of these jobs on their own tells the whole story of running a dog shelter, but together they are a pretty accurate picture of what everyday shelter life looks like.
Behind the photographs of happy dogs are countless practical jobs that have to be done every single day.
Some are planned. Some appear without warning. And sometimes, they all seem to happen at once.
But every water delivery, cleaned crate and bag of food plays a part in keeping the dogs in our care safe, comfortable and well looked after.
