Life at Compassion for Greek Paws is all about thinking ahead, and this week’s task focused on making the shelter more comfortable for the warmer months to come.
Several young trees that had unexpectedly sprouted in the garden were carefully transplanted into the shelter’s run area, where they will hopefully grow into valuable sources of shade for the dogs in future summers.
Creating cooler spaces is an ongoing priority at the shelter. During the hottest months of the year, shade plays an important role in helping dogs stay comfortable and protected from the intense Greek sun.
The weather, however, had other ideas. After reaching a pleasant 20°C one day, temperatures dropped dramatically to just 5°C the next, bringing layers of clothing, grey skies, and persistent rain. ☔
While the conditions were not ideal for taking dogs out for longer walks, they turned out to be perfect for planting. Cooler temperatures and plenty of rain give newly transplanted trees the best possible chance of establishing strong roots before summer arrives.
Many of the improvements made at the shelter happen one small step at a time. A tree planted today may provide years of shade and comfort for future rescue dogs.
Another day, another task, and another small improvement for the dogs who call the shelter home.
