Compassion for Greek Paws experienced extreme weather this week as unusually high winds swept across the Kozani area, causing widespread damage to trees, buildings, fencing, and outdoor structures.
Once it was safe to do so, checks were carried out across the shelter to make sure all animals were safe. Thankfully, every dog and animal at the shelter remained unharmed, and no damage was done to the dogs’ sleeping areas.
However, the storm left significant damage behind. The roof of the old sheep shed was completely blown off, hay supplies were uncovered and scattered across the area, and several shelter structures will now need repairs and rebuilding over the coming days.
One of the hardest-hit areas was the recently completed sink and work station, which had quickly become an important part of daily shelter life. The sink stand, now fixed Kindly welded together by Αβρααμ Αβραμίδης. The sink had made everyday tasks like washing food bowls and water buckets far easier and more efficient. During the storm, the entire sink setup was lifted and moved by the wind, while the shading above the work area was completely destroyed and blown outside the fencing.
Rescue work is never predictable, and shelter life constantly brings new challenges — from caring for the animals every day to repairing damage caused by extreme weather conditions.
Despite everything, spirits remain strong, and work is already underway to clear debris, restack hay supplies, and repair damaged areas.
